there’s gonna be that one person out there who doesn’t like chocolate chips more than raisins, or is allergic to chocolate, and they’re gonna see that one raisin and think, thank god for that raisin.

Feminists have been characterized as whining “victim feminists” and “rape-crisis feminists” who portray women as too weak to defend themselves from men who would harass, beat, sexually assault, or discriminate against them. What’s most bizarre about this accusation is that the women who work against male violence and exploitation are some of the strongest, toughest, most articulate, and courageous people around, and to describe them as whining victims who passively sit around feeling sorry for themselves is about as far from reality as one could imagine. What makes whining so unappealing is that it is both a call for help and a form of focused self-pity that is so intense that nothing in the way of help has much chance of getting through. In other words, whining is a manipulative setup in which actually making things better isn’t the point. But this is a far cry from feminist demands for an end to discrimination, violence, and sexual exploitation.
In spite of its loose hold on reality, the “victim feminism” criticism works because it draws attention away from men as victimizers and focuses instead on women who are victimized. In one sense, critics are correct that focusing on women as victims is counterproductive, but not because we should instead ignore victimization altogether. The real reason to avoid an exclusive focus on women as victims is to free us to concentrate also on the compelling fact that men are the ones who victimize, and such behavior and the patriarchal system that encourages it are the problem. Otherwise we might find ourselves concentrating on male victimization of women as something that happens to women without being done by men.

A lot of people are saying that tumblr is a horrible place to learn because people will jump down your throat if they don’t agree with you. WELL YES, GOOD because in school, I couldn’t do that with my teachers. I don’t know how it was for anyone else, but it was impossible to get your point across without the teacher showing their “I’m older, smarter, wiser, studied more than you so I’m right” attitude which is NOT the case cause I have seen some cases in real life and on tumblr where students have treated the teacher’s LIFE on things they assume to know about. You don’t have to have a job or be old to be smart. I can argue with my teachers in university but even then, that type of attitude will come out in teachers and they do not want to encourage you to think at all. SOME teachers and some schools are like this of course, but aruging in a respectful manner will obviously be educating, I’m so down with that.
Exactly. I’ve had so many teachers say stupid shit throughout my academic career and they go unchallenged because no one wants to be the lone student who challenges a teacher. Even in college I’ve seen teachers and students get into arguments about shit that the students have actually experienced, and the teachers will still assert that they’re right because how could a student possibly know better than their degree? And in school you have to show respect people’s hateful fucking opinions. You have to be quiet and listen while your classmate or teacher spouts some racist, sexist or otherwise bigoted bullshit about things they know nothing about. And if you get mad, you get put out of the class for causing a disruption. You’re not allowed to react naturally to things.
